CALL FOR PAPERS Forty-Second Annual Hawai'i International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS-42) January 5 - 8, 2009 (Monday-Thursday) Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort and Spa on the Big Island (www.hiltonwaikoloavillage.com) Track: Knowledge Management Systems ********************************** MINITRACK: Knowledge Management/Organizational Memory Success and Performance Measurements Research into knowledge management, organizational memories, and organizational learning has been affected by investigations such as implementation aspects, system developments, or knowledge flows during a number of years. Therefore, a high maturity level of knowledge management research has been achieved. However, organizational knowledge management initiatives are more and more faced with budget cuts and justification demands due to intense competition in today's business environments. The influences of the rapid pace of globalization and of the ongoing liberalization of national and international markets lead to the emergence of increased pressure on existing companies. Project managers of knowledge management initiatives like Chief Knowledge Officers need to justify their budgets and thus are in need of qualitative and quantitative evidence of the initiatives' success. This minitrack explores research into strategies, methodologies, and stories that relate to measure this success. In addition, this minitrack will be used to explore the bodies of performance measurements that define the current state of research in measuring knowledge management, organizational memory, and organizational learning success. Topics and research areas include, but are not limited to: * Frameworks and models for assessing knowledge management and/or organizational memory systems * Methodologies and processes for measuring knowledge management and/or organizational memory success and performance * Impact of knowledge management strategy, organization, systems, culture, and other issues on knowledge management/organizational memory success * Organizational effectiveness/efficiency due to knowledge management/organizational memory/organizational learning, knowledge and organizational memory use * Knowledge management, organizational memory, and organizational learning metrics * Knowledge management, organizational memory, and organizational learning success factors and key performance indicators * Benchmarking of knowledge management/organizational memory initiatives * Case studies of knowledge management and organizational memory success and performance measurements * Measuring knowledge management and/or organizational memory performance in global organizations and globally dispersed communities * Effectiveness and/or efficiency of knowledge management/organizational memory systems * Modeling and measuring the impact of social software on knowledge management performance * Defining knowledge management and organizational memory success Co-chairs: Murray Jennex (Primary Contact) Information and Decision Science San Diego State University San Diego, CA, USA Phone: +1-760-966-0548 Fax: +1-760-722-2668 Email: Murphjenaol.com, mjennexmail.sdsu.edu Stefan Smolnik Institute of Research on Information Systems European Business School (EBS) International University Schloss Reichartshausen Rheingaustr. 165375 Oestrich-Winkel, Germany Phone: +49-6723-991-246 Fax: +49-6723-991-259 Email: stefan.smolnikebs.edu URL: http://www.ebs.edu/iris ************************************* MINITRACK: Knowledge Management Tools, Technologies, Mashups, and Design Approaches The objective of this minitrack is to develop the architecture of knowledge management systems to support organizations facing changing environments. Organizational decision-making and learning are people-intensive processes. Individuals learn and share what they have learned with those "nearby" them, who in turn share knowledge with others. In this manner, knowledge propagates or "spirals" throughout the organization and beyond (Nonaka 1994, 1998; Nonaka and Takeuchi, 1995). This growth of knowledge and the understanding it brings enable organizations to react quickly to changing environments, a necessity for survival. However, because these needs are so strongly based in the social perspective, we believe that technological support of these systems should have a foundation that can recognize the social aspects of knowledge creation and use (see, for example, Brown and Duguid 2000). Researchers and practitioners interested in submitting papers to this minitrack are encouraged to explore knowledge management architectures, tools, and mashups - for example as related to supporting knowledge use and transfer or to organizational learning, particularly from a design science perspective. We welcome a wide range of approaches that focus on architectural design for KM or learning organizations. Topics and research areas include, but are not limited to: * Methodologies, tools, processes, technologies for developing KM and/or Organizational Memory Systems * Empirical studies of designing and using KM tools and systems * Systems design for social knowledge creation and use, e.g. social software system architectures * KM tools that map, track, or visualize social networks to facilitate knowledge sharing * Evaluation of knowledge retrieval and representation methods * Using semantic technologies to implement knowledge retrieval and representation * Developing processes and systems for knowledge visualization techniques * Designing for data, information, knowledge, and learning * Learning-based systems design * Knowledge Management Systems Design for Wicked Problems; Ethics and Aesthetics; Inquiring Organizations; and Learning Organizations * Design of technological support for Implementing Churchman's Inquiring Systems; Inquiring Organizations; and Learning Organizations Co-chairs: Stefan Smolnik (Primary Contact) Institute of Research on Information Systems European Business School (EBS) International University Schloss Reichartshausen Rheingaustr. 165375 Oestrich-Winkel, Germany Phone: +49-6723-991-246 Fax: +49-6723-991-259 Email: stefan.smolnikebs.edu URL: http://www.ebs.edu/iris Nassim Belbaly GSCM Montpellier Business School 2300, Avenue des Moulins34185 Montpellier Cedex 4, France Phone: +33-4-6710-2516 Fax: +33-4-6745-1356 Email: n.belbalysupco-montpellier.fr Richard Orwig Accounting and Information Systems Weis School of Business Susquehanna University 514 University Ave., Selinsgrove, PA 17870, USA Phone: +1-570-372-4380 Email: orwigsusqu.edu HICSS conferences are devoted to the most relevant advances in the information, computer, and system sciences, and encompass developments in both theory and practice. They empower learners with capabilities to customize and even construct their own personal learning environments (PLEs). These PLEs typically consist of distributed web-applications and services that support system-spanning collaborative and individual learning activities in formal as well as informal settings. Technologically speaking, this shift manifests in a learning web where information is distributed across sites and activities can easily encompass the use of a greater number of pages and services offered through web-based learning applications. Mash-ups, the 'frankensteining' of software artefacts and data, have emerged to be the software development approach for these long-tail and perpetual-beta niche markets. Core technologies facilitating this paradigm shift are Ajax, javascript-based widget-collections, and microformats that help to glue together public web APIs in individual applications. In a wide range of European IST-funded research projects such as iCamp, LTfLL, LUISA, Palette, and TENcompetence a rising passion for these technologies can be identified. This workshop therefore serves as a forum to bring together researchers and developers from these projects and an open public that have an interest in understanding and engineering mash-up personal learning environments (MUPPLEs). TOPICS OF INTEREST (but not limited to): * Architectures: e.g. from cross-domain java scripting up to to embedding of pedagogy * Learning Models: e.g. Activity Models, Environment Design Models, including their theoretical bases * Learning Services: e.g. Concepts and Demonstrators for recombinable learning services * Authoring: e.g. editors, user-interfaces for mash-up creation, drag&drop mash-up creation, in-place editing * Data formats: e.g. microformats, new data models for fragmented data such as streaming data, recombination models needed to establish data interoperability * User Interfaces: Concepts, Metaphors, Workflows * Mash-Up Strategies: cooperative, value-chain oriented, master and slave * Development Methodologies: for building and sustaining communities and services, including analyses of success factors, constraints, characteristics of user uptake including long-tail requirements engineering and software development WORKSHOP FORMAT The aim of this workshop is to bring together the various research and development groups in technology-enhanced learning that currently focus on the development of the next generation learning environments -- learning environments that put the individuum centre stage and empower learners with design capabilities by deploying modern mash-up principles to establish system-spanning interoperability. As this approach is rather young, the workshop seeks to attract both research results and work in progress in order to chart out the current state-of-the-art of MUPPLEs in TEL and to define main enablers and future challenges. Naturally, it will serve as a forum for establishing new collaborations. Using the presentations as impulses and continuing post-talk debates, the workshop will conclude the day with an open discussion exchanging ideas, summing up, and defining a medium- to long-term research agenda. The workshop is supported by the European Commission as a concertation activity between especially the European Projects iCamp, LUISA, LTfLL, Palette, and TENcompetence. SUBMISSIONS Authors are invited to submit original unpublished research as full papers (8 pages), work-in-progress as short papers (max. 4 pages) or position statements (max. 2 pages). All submitted papers will be peer- reviewed by at least three members of the program committee for originality, significance, clarity, and quality. The workshop proceedings will be published online as part of the CEUR Workshop proceedings series. http://CEUR-WS.org is a recognized ISSN publication series, with ISSN 1613-0073. Furthermore, the two best papers of the workshop will be published in a special issue of the International Journal of Technology Enhanced Learning (IJTEL, http://www.inderscience.com/browse/index.php?journalCODE=ijtel). Authors should use the Springer LNCS format (http://www.springer.com/ lncs). PAKM2008: 7th International Conference on Practical Aspects of Knowledge Management http://pakm2008.comp.ae.keio.ac.jp/ Hiyoshi Campus, Keio University, Japan Nov. 21 -- 23, 2008 Call for Papers & Call for Workshop Proposals (see the end of this topic) Motivation The PAKM Conference Series offers a communication forum and meeting ground for practitioners and researchers in developing and deploying advanced business solutions for the management of knowledge in organizations. PAKM is a forum for people to share their views, to exchange ideas, to develop new insights, and to envision completely new kinds of solutions to Knowledge Management problems. The topics will cover all relevant aspects of knowledge management. We invite practitioners and researchers from all over the world to submit papers. We are looking forward to a conference which will address a wide spectrum of topics from a variety of perspectives. Call for Papers PAKM2008 addresses all aspects of Knowledge Management and their role in next-generation business solutions. We seek original contributions in the triangle of business and organization sciences, cognitive science, and computer science that represent a true advancement beyond the state-of-the-art of Knowledge Management. Business and organization sciences provide the overall framework for developing a knowledge management approach with a focus on the business aspects rather than on information technology aspects. Computer science provides the tools needed to build the information systems that are often required to make certain aspects of a knowledge management solution work. Cognitive science helps to design knowledge management solutions in line with the cognitive capabilities of the people involved and optimally embedded in their work context. We wish to encourage the submission of contributions that espouse an interdisciplinary approach, which will therefore be favored over one-dimensional papers. Apart from a clear description of the real-world problems they address, papers must point out the business benefits of the suggested solutions. Furthermore, papers should emphasize the novel aspects of the suggested approach. Papers may address one or more of the following topics or any other topic as long as it fits into the overall conference theme: Building and maintaining knowledge inventories Knowledge directories Knowledge modeling Automatic creation of meta data Knowledge integration Collaboration and knowledge sharing Knowledge sharing communities Social software Knowledge sharing and collaboration platforms Integration of processes across organizational boundaries Capturing and securing knowledge Knowledge capturing within business processes Knowledge acquisition, lessons learned, debriefing Organizational memories Knowledge utilization Content-oriented retrieval Question answering Integration of knowledge and business processes Graphical user interfaces for retrieving and visualizing knowledge Developing new knowledge Innovation management Ontology learning and development Knowledge mining (from data, text and the Web) Communities of practice Knowledge Measurement Measuring the benefits of knowledge management solutions Benchmarking Intellectual capital Important Dates: Submissions: 15, July 2008 Notification: 15, August 2008 Camera-Ready: 30, August 2008 Submission Please submit your contribution by uploading it to the PAKM2008 conference management system.
