The annual FGWM Workshop - why to participate The Special Interest Group on Knowledge Management (Fachgruppe Wissensmanagement) - in short FGWM - of the German Society of Computer Science (GI) organizes an annual workshop "Knowledge and Experience Management" within the LWA workshop series (see LWA2009). Below we have compiled the main reasons why attendance to that workshop is attractive and why the workshop is unique among the many existing conferences and workshops on topics related to knowledge management: * The workshop is not a mini-conference but a real workshop because o there is ample discussion time for each of the presented papers, o it gives the opportunity to present work in progress, possibly in its early stages only, o there is the possibility for break-out sessions on topics to be discussed more deeply. * Therefore the workshop provides the opportunity for young researchers (even excellent master students) to o present and discuss preliminary work, o get feedback on their work from a larger audience with people having quite different viewpoints, o get accustomed to presenting and defending their work at scientific events. * The workshop is a forum for testing the viability of new ideas (by junior as well as senior researchers) before more effort and resources are put into them. * Since the workshop attracts students as well as senior members of the community it plays a vital role in o fostering the next generation of researchers (like a doctoral symposium but across institutions), o helping to maintain a high quality of PhD work, o recruiting research staff (master students looking for PhD positions, PhD students looking for postdoc positions). * The workshop is enriched by including a few top-notch papers already presented at international venues. Since nobody can attend all relevant conferences any more this is a good opportunity to catch up on missed papers. * The workshop is the forum for connecting with the German knowledge management community. * Last but not least, the workshop has a very low participation fee and is thus much more affordable than pre-conference workshops which can usually only be attended when also registering to the main conference (with the full conference fee). A statement from a young researcher why she finds the FGWM workshop attractive The FGWM workshop offers a unique opportunity for the promotion of young researchers. With its low participation fee and the informal nature it provides a platform for young PhD students and advanced MSc students to present their projects and theses to a larger audience. It is thus an excellent opportunity to gain first experiences in scientific practice and exchange. The possibility to take part in scientific discourse already at an early stage is very valuable to young researchers. In the field of knowledge management, this is a unique feature of the FGWM workshop. Besides getting useful feedback on their work from senior researchers outside their own research group, young researchers profit from an exchange of experiences with fellow PhD students from other universities. A statement from a senior researcher why he finds the FGWM workshop attractive The FGWM workshop provides senior researchers not only with a platform for presenting their own research interests and discuss presented work, but also offers the opportunity to share best practices on PhD supervision among different universities and research institutions. Senior researchers can pass along experience on project proposal writing, project management, and evaluation. At this venue senior researchers are easily approachable and can help with issues PhD students might not want to discuss with their supervisors. Further, students can easily investiage career opportunities in academia. The next FGWM will take place in fall 2010. ......................................................................... *sigkm*sigkm*sigkm*sigkm*sigkm*sigkm*sigkm*sigkm*sigkm*sigkm*sigkm*sigkm* ......................................................................... ICCBR is the leading international meeting on case-based reasoning. Previous ICCBR conferences have been held in Sesimbra, Portugal (1995), Providence, Rhode Island, USA (1997), Seeon Monastery, Germany (1999), Vancouver, BC, Canada (2001), Trondheim, Norway (2003), Chicago, Illinois, USA (2005), Belfast, Northern Ireland (2007), and Seattle, USA (2009). Through 2009, ICCBR has been a biennial conference, held in alternation with its sister conference, the European Conference on Case-Based Reasoning (ECCBR), which was located in Europe. At the 2009 ICCBR, the ICCBR Program Committee elected to extend an offer of consolidation with ECCBR. The offer was accepted by the ECCBR 2010 organizers and they have considered it approved by the ECCBR community, as the two conferences share a majority of Program Committee members. From 2010, ICCBR and ECCBR will be merged in a single conference series, called ICCBR. As there have been 8 previous ICCBR events and 9 previous ECCBR events, the combined series will be considered the 18th ICCBR. In order to expand the frontiers of CBR as a scientific field, we would like to (1) emphasize the connections between CBR and related areas, and (2) explore new problems and industrial solutions. Another primary objective of ICCBR-10 is to encourage new members to join the CBR community and regularly attend / participate in this premier CBR conference. Thus, the ICCBR-10 program will include several new ideas along with the regular keynote addresses, technical program, applications track and workshop sessions. Details on these elements of the program can be found on the ICCBR-10 web site. ------------------------------ ICCBR-10 Program Highlights ------------------------------ Doctoral Consortium ICCBR-10 will hold the a CBR Doctoral Consortium (DC) with the following objectives: (1) To provide a supportive setting for feedback on students' current research and guidance on future research directions, (2) To offer each student comments and fresh perspectives on their work from faculty and students outside their own institution, and (3) To promote the development of a supportive community of scholars and a spirit of collaborative research. The DC gives early stage postgraduate students the important opportunity to discuss their research ideas and get very valuable feedback. Computer Cooking Contest The 3rd Computer Cooking Contest (CCC) will take place at ICCBR-10 and aims to attract new people to deal with AI technologies such as case-based reasoning, semantic technologies, search and information extraction. The CCC is an open competition. Any individual, student, research group and professional is invited to submit software that creates a recipe, such as for a single dish or even a three course menu, i.e., recipes for a starter, a main dish and a dessert. The input will be a database of basic recipes from which appropriate recipes must be selected, modified or even combined. The queries to the system consist of a number of desired ingredients and other requirements for the dish or menu. Industry / Applications Track Presentations ICCBR-10 invites submissions for a special presentation-only track of deployed applications on all aspects of Case-Based Reasoning. The applications track provides an opportunity for both industry and academic application developers to showcase their work in 20-30 minute high-quality presentations, without the need to write a paper. This event takes place on one day and is an excellent way for industry members to interact with students and academic researchers. Presenters must submit an email expressing their interest and a short (one paragraph) description of their work to Dr. Jerzy Surma at applications@iccbr2010.com by the specified deadline. Please make the subject of this email "ICCBR-10 Applications Track Submission." Opportunities are also available to sponsor ICCBR-10 and have an official conference presence. Workshops ICCBR-10 invites proposals for full day or half day workshops as part of the Workshop Program. ICCBR-10 workshops will provide an informal setting in which participants will have the opportunity to meet and discuss topics with a selected CBR focus in an environment that encourages the exchange of ideas. Recent ICCBR workshop focus areas have included: health sciences, textual CBR, computer gaming, process workflows, context awareness, uncertainty, and knowledge discovery. Please submit inquiries to Dr. Cindy Marling at workshops@iccbr2010.com. ------------------------------------------ Main Technical Program Paper Submission ------------------------------------------ Important Dates: o Submission deadline: 15 Feb 2010 o Notification of acceptance: 15 April 2010 o Camera ready copy due: 5 May 2010 o Conference dates: 19-22 July 2010 Submission Topics: The ICCBR-10 Program Committee invites submissions of original theoretical research, applied research and deployed application papers on all aspects of Case-Based Reasoning.
